Unacceptable disparities affect Latinos in our criminal justice system, including the sobering statistic that a Latino male born in the U.S. in 2001 faces a 1 in 6 chance of going to prison during his or her lifetime. In Colorado, Latinos comprise 20.7% of the general population yet 32.9% of the prison population.

Policy Value: Transform the unacceptable disparities that impact people of color in our criminal justice system, including the sobering statistic that 1 in every 3 black males born today can expect to go to prison at some point in their lifetime, as well as 1 in every 6 Latino males, as compared to 1 in every 17 white males, if current incarceration trends continue.

2014 Policy Platform

Introduce anti-racial profiling laws in Colorado Create mechanisms to collect and analyze consistent race/ethnicity statistics by criminal justice agencies Reduce entry into the juvenile justice system and emphasize preventative and rehabilitative programs Enhance civilian oversight of police, including the establishment of truly independent civilian monitors that apply best practice standards Eliminate racial disparities in sentencing by ensuring fairness in sentencing laws Repeal the death penalty in Colorado
